The Accord comes with a standard 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 192 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque. The Camry, on the other hand, has a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 203 horsepower. When comparing the drivetrains of the base models, the Camry offers more horsepower. However, it only offers 184 lb-ft of torque, which is where the Honda Accord steals back the lead. Torque, after all, is how much power the engine can produce and determines how quickly it can accelerate. The Camry’s base model is also heavier at 3,340 pounds than the Accord’s 3,239 pounds.
Despite its more powerful engine, the weight of the Camry doesn’t do it any favors, and the Accord, with its impressive torque, could actually be faster. Agile handling, responsive steering, well-controlled body motions, and a well-damped suspension make the Accord a great choice, but the Camry trims offer more engine options for performance enthusiasts. When it comes to fuel efficiency, the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord are equally matched. Each has an EPA-estimated rating of 32 mpg combined. The Camry’s efficiency takes a dip when you upgrade to all-wheel drive and higher trim levels.
Safety Ratings and Features
Toyota Safety Sense and Honda Sensing are both reliable and trustworthy safety suites designed to keep you and your family safe on the road. Both systems offer excellent driver-assistance technology features, such as automatic high beams, cruise control, and a collection of well-placed air bags. While Toyota Safety Sense includes Lane Departure Alert, it really can’t compare to the level of the Road Departure Mitigation System offered by the Honda Accord’s safety suite. While the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not reviewed the 2024 models yet, the results for the 2023 models are available. The 2023 Honda Accord received Good ratings across the board for its crashworthiness. The 2023 Toyota Camry was lacking in its moderate overlap front test, where the IIHS rated it as Marginal. In addition, the IIHS rated the headlights on some of the Camry’s trim models as Acceptable compared to the Honda’s all-around Good ratings.
