Ike Gives to Humane Society of Southern Illinois
Ike Honda and Volkswagen of Marion recently joined forces to support the Humane Society of Southern Illinois (HSSI). Since 1956, the Humane Society of Southern Illinois has provided warm beds and food to animals at the shelter in Murphysboro, located off Highway 13. Anywhere from 2,000 to 3,000 animals are brought to the Humane Society of Southern Illinois each year.
The non-profit open-access facility accepts any domesticated animal brought in by the public and functions as a holding facility for all of Jackson County Animal Controls. While open-access facilities are usually known as kill centers, the Humane Society of Southern Illinois has a rescue rate of 98%, nearly meeting the status of a no-kill center.
HSSI has an active rescue program, working hand in hand with licensed no-kill centers to save at-risk animals. In 2021, the Humane Society transported 793 animals to no-kill rescue centers. HSSI is thankful for a local group of volunteers who meet weekly to transport at-risk animals to no-kill centers along I-57 all the way up to Chicago.
The Humane Society’s facilities include an emergency receiving building for animals rescued outside of normal business hours. Outside the building, you’ll find a form where you can submit information about where the animal came from. After you submit an emergency rescue form, the shelter will reach out if they need more information about where the animal came from. The team at HSSI will scan for a chip, check for tags and collars, and post a picture on Facebook of the animal in hopes of reaching the owner.
To prevent an overflow of animals, the Humane Society of Southern Illinois counts on a foster program. The program gets animals into a home to decompress and learn how to function in a home, rather than a shelter. If you are interested in fostering an animal, you can reach HSSI at 618-457-2362. To adopt an animal from the Humane Society, just complete the online application on their Facebook page or pick up a hard copy application in the shelter. An adoption counselor will reach out to schedule a time to meet with you. You’ll be able to meet your new furry friend in a playpen built for meet and greets.
If you are considering adopting a pet, the Humane Society asks that you please remember that pet ownership is a great responsibility. HSSI does not encourage gifting pets as a surprise. In fact, they require everyone in the household to meet the pet before adoption.
