Honda Civic

There’s no such thing as the perfect car, but the Civic is pretty close. Recent models have better driving range than most vehicles in their class. The 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine has an EPA-estimated 33 mpg in city traffic and 42 mpg on the highway. Older models also have great miles-per-gallon ratings. And due to Honda’s excellent build quality, they’ll probably last you for years. Even a 10-year-old Civic has excellent fuel economy. Its 1.5-liter hybrid engine has an astonishing 44 mpg combined city and highway rating and an average price of around $10,000. The 10th generation Honda Civic, which spanned from 2016 to 2021, has a similar mileage to the new model.

Toyota Prius

The Prius springs to many drivers’ minds when low fuel consumption arises. It was built with this specific purpose in mind and gradually improved with each model year. New models get an astonishing 57 mpg in the city and 56 mpg on the highway, which would already be impressive for a much smaller vehicle. Even a 10-year-old model will get you a combined rating of over 50 mpg, and you can get one for around $12,000.

However, although new Prius models have solved most of these issues, older ones suffer from a lack of acceleration, low-quality interior materials, and a design that many drivers find a little awkward. If miles per gallon is your number one criterion when choosing a used car, there’s probably no better choice than the Prius. If you also want some accelerating power and better interior and exterior looks, other alternatives exist, including the above-mentioned Honda Civic.

Honda Accord

If you’re looking for an economical sedan but need a little more space than the Civic can provide, the Honda Accord may be the ideal choice. It has been one of the best-selling cars in the U.S. over the past few decades, and rightly so. It manages to blend sizeable interior space with great agility, meaning that it’s both handy and very exciting. It’s also a safe vehicle, with many standard active safety features, especially on newer models.

Its tenth generation, from 2018 to 2022, is an excellent choice for a used vehicle and costs around $20,000. It has a combined rating of 33 mpg, which is awesome considering the Accord’s size and its powerful 192 hp turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Older models also have over 30 mpg, with similarly powered engines.

Ford Fiesta

Although it was discontinued in the U.S. market in 2022, the Ford Fiesta is an excellent choice for those who want an economical subcompact car for crowded city streets. Its last generation was first introduced in 2011 and is economical and has great handling and decent acceleration. It’s available as both a sedan and hatchback and has a combined fuel economy of around  35 mpg with a 1.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine at an average price of around $5,500. It doesn’t compromise on agility and performance, though, as this engine can produce up to 123 hp.

The Fiesta is also an all-around great car, with a comfortable interior for its size and a relatively low price. More recent models also have a great infotainment system, which supports easy smartphone integration through either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Honda CR-V

You can get both the comfort of an SUV and great fuel economy. The Honda CR-V is an excellent example of that. Its fifth generation lasted from 2017 until 2022 and is a great choice for an economical used car, and you can find a good one for around $22,000. All trims come with a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that has a power output of up to 190 hp and 179 lb-ft of torque. Despite its size and power, the CR-V has an EPA-estimated 30 mpg combined, with around 28 in the city and 34 on the highway.

There’s also a hybrid version starting from 2020. Despite having more power than the regular version, it has a combined rating of 38 mpg. Its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine works alongside a hybrid system to deliver a power output of up to 212 hp, which is remarkable for such an economical vehicle.
