Difference Between the 2023 Honda CR-V EX and EX-L
The 2023 Honda CR-V is an adventure-ready midsize SUV with efficient, turbocharged performance and an accommodating, five-passenger interior with increased load room and clever technology. This year, the new design offers more space, improved electronics, and a choice of gasoline or gas/electric hybrid powertrains.
Honda has decreased the number of trims to four, dropping the previous entry-level LX trim. Are you trying to decide which 2023 Honda CR-V trim level is best for you? We’ll go over the differences between the EX and EX-L trims.
On the outside, the EX and EX-L both have front and rear LED lights, a power moonroof, 18-inch silver-painted alloy wheels, and body-colored roofline spoilers with integrated brake lights. Both trims are available in eight exterior colors: Urban Gray Pearl, Canyon River Blue Metallic, Crystal Black Pearl, Lunar Silver Metallic, Meteorite Gray Metallic, Platinum White Pearl, Radiant Red Metallic, and Still Night Pearl. The only real exterior difference between them is the programmable power tailgate found on the EX-L instead of the EX.
Their exterior measurements are the same as the other Honda CR-V trims. The wheelbase is 106.3 inches, length is 184.8 inches, and height is 66.2 inches when you select two-wheel drive (2WD) or 66.5 inches with the all-wheel drive (AWD). Unladen ground clearance is 7.8 inches for 2WD and 8.2 inches for AWD, and the width is 73.5 inches. In the 2WD and AWD, respectively, the EX weighs 3,497 lbs or 3,616 lbs and the EX-L weighs 3,525 lbs or 3,635 lbs.
Honda CR-V Interior
The 2023 CR-V gets a new full-dash width air vent and steering wheel on the Civic, adding a dynamic visual appeal. The Civic will influence the design of future Honda vehicles. Both trims have reclining seats, a 60/40 split rear seatback that folds down, head restraints in all seating positions, and heated front seats. You’ll immediately feel connected to your surroundings because of the crisp, clean style and spacious view, whether you opt for a 2023 CR-V EX or EX-L.
The CR-V EX features a 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat with two-way power lumbar support, whereas the EX-L trim upgrades it by adding two-position memory. The EX-L trim also includes leather-trimmed seats and a front passenger seat with four-way power adjustment, plus a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob. The EX-L’s most notable difference is probably the infotainment screen, swapping out the EX’s seven-inch system with a nine-inch model.
In terms of dimension, there is no variation. Both offer 103.5 cubic feet of passenger space, as well as 38.2 inches of headroom in the front and rear seat rows. Legroom is 41.3 inches up front and 41 inches in the back. The shoulder room is 57.9 inches up front, 55.9 inches in the back, and hip room is 55.6 up front and 52.6 in the back. Cargo volume is 39.3 cubic feet and is one of the CR-V’s strongest points.
The 2023 Honda CR-V EX is priced at $32,355 after destination charges of $1,245. The EX-L is priced at $35,005 after the same charge. AWD is available for an extra $1,500 on both models. Any of the four premium paint colors — Platinum White Pearl, Radiant Red Metallic, Still Night Pearl, and Urban Gray Pearl — cost an additional $395. There are also utility or cosmetic options available for either trim. Depending on the package, the extra prices range from $393 to $1,780.
Power and Efficiency
The EX and EX-L trims have a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that produces 190 horsepower, while the Sport and Touring trims have a 2.0-liter gas engine combined with an electric motor that produces 204 horsepower. The hybrid engine helps maximize fuel economy, but the EX or EX-L should bring enough power if driving around Marion, Illinois.
Both have a 14-gallon fuel tank, and the continuously variable transmission 2WD setup achieves 28 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, and 30 combined. If you opt for continuously variable transmission AWD, you can expect a fuel efficiency of 27 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg combined.
The 2023 Honda EX model has a 7.0-inch driver information interface screen, Bluetooth hands-free link, and radio streaming, SMS text messaging functions, speed-sensitive volume compensation, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 2.5-amp USB smartphone/audio interface, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. It also includes a 3-amp USB-C charging port up front and two 12-volt power outlets, one in the front console and another in the cargo area.
The EX-L’s 9-inch color touch screen also has a volume knob, customizable feature settings, and smart shortcuts. The expanded Honda infotainment system adds SiriusXM radio, HD radio, and a 320-watt audio system with eight speakers. Wireless versions of phone charging, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are all features on the EX-L if you’d prefer to save your connection ports for other uses.
2023 CR-V Safety Features
The only true safety difference between the two trim levels is that front and rear parking sensors get added to the EX-L. Honda equips both trims with Honda Sensing technologies, including the collision mitigation braking system, road departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, traffic jam assist, traffic sign recognition system, blind spot information with cross-traffic monitoring, auto high-beam headlights, and low-speed braking control. The notable collision-response features include next-generation front airbags, knee airbags, and rear passenger side-impact airbags.
